Overview of Greenline 40 Hybrid Yacht

Forty feet is a sweet spot, size-wise, when considering yachts. Yachts in this category are large enough to accommodate a small group of cruising adventurers and substantial enough to provide a level of assurance in poor weather. At the same time, finding moorage is less of a challenge and the costs of acquisition and ownership are more easily afforded than those associated with larger vessels. One can tell a lot about a yacht builder by taking a hard look at their vessels at or around the 40-foot class. To that end, Greenline’s 40-foot hybrid yacht is more than a worthy representative of a well-established, forward-looking company committed to building premium quality products as well as enabling environmentally responsible yachting. The Greenline 40 is setting a high bar for the entire industry. Continue reading for a full review of the Greenline 40 hybrid yacht.

Review of Greenline 40 Hybrid Yacht: On The Deck

Boarding the Greenline 40 hybrid yacht is accomplished through boarding doors on both the port and starboard sides of the cockpit. An extension of the hardtop above the cockpit provides a measure of protection from the elements, and coupled with the generous dimensions of the area the cockpit will surely become a major entertainment area. There are built in aft corner seats both port and starboard. The port corner seat provides storage, while the starboard seat covers the shore power connections. The transom, brilliantly, folds down to provide a useful deck when boarding or debarking a dinghy. A transom seat is optionally available to provide both fore and aft facing seating, while still permitting access to the dinghy deck.

Greenline incorporates abundant stowage throughout the vessel. There’s enough room under the cockpit of the Greenline 40 hybrid to stow a (foldable) rigid bottom inflatable.

The aft bulkhead of the main cabin may be folded up to eliminate any barrier between the cockpit and the galley. A fold out extension of the galley countertop creates an ideal place for serving food and beverages aft, and the cook or bartender is included in the conversation and celebration.

Side decks on the Greenline 40 hybrid are a walk-around design, with access from the cockpit to the foredeck available both port and starboard. The aft portions of the side decks are covered by the overhanging hardtop, providing a dry space for deckhands during wet weather. Nonskid decking is standard, with teak available as an option. Stainless steel rails atop the bulwarks provide just under three feet of security and protection above the deck when transitioning forward. Overhead and lateral grab rails are thoughtfully positioned. Stainless rails on the foredeck and the raised toe rail establish about 30-inches of safety.

Foredeck features include a built-in sunlounge, with drink holders and a custom bimini top deployable when there’s simply too much sun. Greenline thoughtfully designed the bimini top so that it doesn’t block the vision forward from the helm while in use. Ground tackle includes an anchor on the port side of the stem, with a winch and chain locker accessible through hatches.

Interior Review of the Greenline 40 Hybrid Yacht

There’s a side door next to the lower helm, (essential to provide the skipper quick access to the deck when docking, etc.). However, nearly everyone going aboard the Greenline 40 hybrid yacht will enter the main cabin through the aft bulkhead door conveniently located only steps away from the boarding doors in the cockpit.

Upon entering the main cabin, the galley is situated most aft. A solid surface countertop, molded-in sink, convection cooktop, and microwave oven are oriented to port. A “full size” refrigerator with a separate freezer compartment is opposite the walkway to starboard. Joinery throughout the vessel (teak and other hardwood choices available) is precisely fit and impressively finished. Lockers and drawers are abundant as well as conveniently located and thoughtfully designed in the galley area of the Greenline 40 hybrid yacht.

The salon is characterized by plenty of headroom as well as large windows on both sides. The dinette area is forward of the galley, large enough to “convert” to an additional bunk if required. There is stowage below the settee, and upholstery options include both vinyl and leather. The lines of the vessel permit great visibility from the salon, even when seated.

Additional counter space, along with a beverage locker and other stowage, runs along the starboard side of the salon. An electric lift raises a flat screen TV when desired and lowers it out of sight at other times.

The helm is in the starboard forequarter of the main cabin, with a sunroof feature introducing additional light. The sunroof is additionally positioned above a sliding panel over a portion of the guest stateroom, so when light and air is desired in the guest stateroom but privacy isn’t important the guest stateroom can be very well illuminated.

The Greenline 40 hybrid yacht is a two-stateroom design. The master stateroom is most forward, with a “scissors” style berth. Two single berths pivot from the head to be several feet apart at the base, or they may be pushed together and create a combined queen size mattress. Two hanging lockers, two portlights, stowage shelving, and a wall mounted flatscreen TV are among the amenities in the master stateroom.

The master stateroom enjoys private access to the head, which includes a dedicated shower stall. An additional doorway to the head facilitates “day head” functionality. The additional doorway is immediately across the companionway from the entrance to the guest stateroom.

Two single bunks in the guest stateroom slide together when desired to create a queen size berth. Conveniences include a hanging locker, one port light, several stowage areas, a built-in seat, as well as the afore-mentioned sliding panel that will introduce additional fresh air and light.

Hybrid Drive System Review

Most people are familiar with the concept of hybrid cars and trucks, and the Greenline 40 hybrid yacht is designed around most of those same principles. Propulsion at low speeds is provided by electric motors, with diesel engines coming online to power the vessel at higher speeds. The concept reduces fuel consumption and helps minimize emissions. Single as well as twin engine designs are available.

In application, the Greenline hybrid system uses electric drive motors, mounted on the shaft just aft of the diesel engine(s). At lower speeds, the Greenline 40 hybrid yacht glides along on electric power alone- in almost total silence. When cruising through a “no wake zone” or enjoying a sunset trip around the harbor- there’s no need to engage the diesel engines at all. Electric-only range is up to about 20 nautical miles, depending upon wind, current, and other variables.

When more speed is desired and the throttle is advanced, diesel propulsion engages. When the diesels begin turning the drive shaft, the electric drive motors automatically convert to generators and recharge the battery banks. The batteries also recharge when connected to shore power, and through a system of solar voltaic panels affixed to the cabin top of the Greenline 40 hybrid yacht.

The solar panels are so efficient that owners of Greenline 40 hybrid yachts can stay at anchor for extended periods without depleting the batteries. The panels provide enough power to sustain the typical “house” loads aboard a 40-foot yacht. Most Greenline 40 hybrid yachts are ordered without an auxiliary generator- freeing up additional stowage space below decks.

Unique Benefits of Owning a Greenline 40 Hybrid Yacht

Greenline hybrid yacht owners enjoy unique experiences not available to others who own yachts that are exclusively petroleum powered.

The nearly silent slow-speed operation creates a more relaxing atmosphere.

Equipped with both diesel and electric power, Greenline hybrid yachts offer exceptional redundancy and provide a greater number of options in case of breakdown or malfunction.

Fewer engine hours can extend various service intervals, reducing maintenance costs. Lower engine hours typically enhance eventual resale values, reducing the cost of ownership.

Solar recharging normally eliminates any need for an auxiliary generator, with no requirement to “run the gen set” and disrupt the tranquility of a wilderness anchorage.

Batteries recharged by sunlight are among the “greenest” sources of energy available. Owners of Greenline hybrid yachts can enjoy the satisfaction of being more environmentally responsible.

Not to be overlooked, it’s not always easy to predict the pricing of fuel in the future- but few would disagree that the general trend will continue upward. Reducing the amount of fuel required to operate a yacht frees up cash for other uses.

Conclusion

With stylish lines, innovative design, exceptional systems and materials choices and top caliber workmanship the Greenline 40 hybrid yacht would be a commendable vessel even if it were not a hybrid yacht. Adding the hybrid factor to this outstanding yacht moves it clearly into a class of its own, providing unique ownership benefits as well as taking far less toll on the environment.

Greenline has been producing hybrid yachts since 2008. Several hundred have been delivered to happy owners all around the world, making Greenline not only the unchallenged leader in hybrid yacht production, but also positioning Greenline among the higher volume builders of any type of yacht in a similar size range.

While other builders are still “figuring it out” or experimenting with what they consider a “new concept”, Greenline is quietly relying on their fifteen years of expertise as a founder of the hybrid yacht category to deliver an exceptional product and a unique ownership experience.
