greenline 45 hybrid yacht review

Overview of Greenline 45 Flybridge Hybrid Yacht

The forty-five-foot segment can be definitive for a yacht builder. At 45-feet, many if not most buyers have some experience with smaller boats. After a series of upgrades, often during the span of a working career, people choosing a boat in this category have frequently developed a personal list of preferences. Intended primarily for weekend, vacation, and extended retirement coastal cruising, 45-foot boats must combine proven design elements while introducing some unique innovations. One of the more outstanding examples of a vessel responding to the traditional values of seakeeping, safety, and stability while leading the way with modern improvements is the Greenline 45 Flybridge Hybrid Yacht. Read further for a detailed review.

Greenline begins with a contemporary hull and superstructure design. The Greenline 45 Flybridge Hybrid Yacht has a fresh, up to date, and contemporary appearance while avoiding over-the-top styling gimmicks which might initially catch the eye- but then seem dated. Without the optional hardtop or bimini canvas, the flybridge is gracefully melded with the cabin top and superstructure.

As with all Greenline hybrid yachts, being “up to date” doesn’t end with styling. Since 2008, Greenline has successfully produced hybrid yachts. Underway at slow speeds, the Greenline 45 Flybridge Hybrid Yacht can operate as a fully electric vessel. At higher speeds, advanced technology diesel engines take over propulsion, while simultaneously recharging the batteries.

Welcome Aboard The Greenline 45 Flybridge Hybrid Yacht

Boarding the Greenline 45 Flybridge Hybrid yacht is convenient from either the hydraulically operated teak swim platform or a boarding door in the starboard gunwale, (strategically opposite the pilot door in the main cabin). The teak boarding platform is submersible- ideal for launching a dinghy from chocks or creating a “private beach” where people can sit waist deep in cooling water on a hot summer day. Greenline offers an optional entertainment center, mounted on the outside of the transom, to additionally encourage swim platform parties on the 45 Flybridge Hybrid yacht.

Two teak steps on both the port and starboard side access the cockpit. Transom seating, (with access to a stowage locker under the cushions, combines with a fixed pedestal table to enable outdoor entertaining. The large flybridge extends over the cockpit, offering some shelter from the elements on a hot sunny day or during a passing shower.

The overhanging flybridge additionally shelters the aft portions of the side deck. Tending aft and midship lines and fenders aboard the Greenline 45 Flybridge hybrid is accomplished with minimal inconvenience during foul weather. Bulwarks and railings of reassuring height provide safety and security everywhere along the ample side decks from the cockpit to the anchor roller on the bow. The foredeck features a seating and lounging area, complete with a “sun pad” designed with flip up back bolsters.

Access to the flybridge is up a set of steps on the port side of the cockpit. The Greenline 45 Flybridge hybrid places the upper helm to port, with the lower helm to starboard. This useful foresight permits landing from either side with good visibility of the dock. A navigator or companion’s seat is to starboard of the helm- and of course a complete array of a buyer’s preferred marine electronics will fit neatly in the console housing. Greenline offers an optional entertainment center for the flybridge, with food prep and refrigeration capabilities. A settee and table located at the aft portion of the flybridge provide additional outdoor dining and entertainment possibilities.

Immediately ahead of the flybridge cowling, Greenline includes a pair of solar panels on the 45 Flybridge hybrid yacht. These solar panels will help maintain an adequate battery charge while at anchor, eliminating any need to run a noisy generator. There is an additional fixed “T-top” option now available for the Greenling 45 Flybridge hybrid, providing an extensive area for locating additional solar panels. Continuing on with our review, we move on to the interior.

Interior Review of the Greenline 45 Flybridge Hybrid Yacht

Entering the main cabin from the cockpit is a smooth and easy transition. In fact, one of the Greenline design trademarks found on their larger yachts and included on the Greenline 45 Flybridge hybrid yacht is a galley fixture located in the aft starboard quarter of the main cabin. Raising a flip up window creates counter service between the galley and the cockpit, accomplished without carrying plates of food and beverage through any doorways separating these two important entertainment areas.

Interior fixtures and finishes make an exceptional impression. The solids and veneers used in the joinery are skillfully matched and coordinated. Windows are large, and there is abundant headroom. Lighting fixtures are contemporary, and classy.

The galley features a molded sink (with convenient counter-top cover) to starboard, immediately ahead of the cockpit area return including an electric convection oven and two burner cooktop. Refrigeration is in the aft port corner of the main cabin, only a couple of steps away from the sink and cooking areas.

Forward of the galley to starboard there are stowage options available. One that is likely to prove popular is a “flip up” wide screen video system. When up, it allows easy viewing from the settee and dining table on the port side of the salon, and when folded down seating and stowage remain available.

The lower helm is to starboard, next to a pilot door that permits the helmsman to double as a deckhand when docking the Greenline 45 Flybridge hybrid. A flip up bolster on the pilot seat provides back support when standing at the helm- and offers the additional convenience of a quickly adjusting its position to enhance passage through the pilot door.

One the lower deck, the Greenline 45 Flybridge hybrid is available in either two or three stateroom layouts. Down companionway steps from the main cabin are rows of matching doors. Opening the door farthest forward gains entry to the VIP stateroom. A walk around bunk is on centerline, with seating a stowage options on either side. Greenline is noted for introducing a great deal of natural light on the lower decks, and the 45 Flybridge hybrid is no exception. There’s no sensation of being “down in a hole” in any of the staterooms.

The guest stateroom has a semi-private ensuite head with deluxe toilet, sink and shower fixtures. A second door to this compartment allows access from the central companionway and it serves as the “day head” as well.

On the two-stateroom model, guests in the VIP stateroom will enjoy a large, “walk in” hanging locker on the starboard side. There’s an identical feature, also to starboard, for the master stateroom, located midships. This pair of stowage areas on the Greenline 45 Flybridge hybrid are possibly the largest amenity of this type on any 45-foot vessel.

The three-stateroom model eliminates the hanging lockers and uses the space for a single berth instead.

The master stateroom is midships, in the most stable part of the boat and well removed from any sound of waves slapping against the stem at anchor. Greenline designed the 45 Flybridge hybrid to use a standard king size mattress, so an eventual replacement mattress as well as all necessary bedding will be readily available. There are settees and large windows to port and starboard in the master stateroom, along with an en suite head to port. Light, airy, spacious, and comfortable- the master stateroom aboard the Greenline 45 Flybridge hybrid rivals similar compartments normally found on substantially larger vessels.

Propulsion Review

Greenline is the acknowledged world leader in creating environmentally responsible motor yachts. The hybrid technology uses a pair of diesel engines, with high efficiency electric motors mounted inline along the shafts. At slower speeds, several hours of propulsion are available from the battery banks alone. A leisurely evening cocktail cruise down a canal or along a shoreline is much enhanced when guests aren’t required to raise their voices above the background noise of diesel engines.

When more speed is desired or required, the Greenline 45 Flybridge hybrid activates the engines. While running on diesel, the electric drive motors convert to high output generators and recharge the batteries.

Most Greenline 45 Flybridge hybrid yachts will be ordered without an auxiliary generator. The large battery banks, recharged by solar panels, will typically prove adequate to power lights, appliances, water pumps, etc. aboard the boat for a weekend at anchor.

In addition to the obvious environmental benefits, owners of a Greenline 45 Flybridge hybrid yacht will enjoy a great number of years’ service from their engines. Diesels run best at higher RPM, under load, and tend to wear out more quickly at lower rpm and light loads. Using electric propulsion for short distance and low speed applications allows the diesels to provide longer service. At resale time, a hybrid yacht will have fewer “hours” on the meter, providing a boost in value not dissimilar from the phenomenon of a “low mileage” automobile.

Diesel engine options range from a pair of 220 HP engines (capable of speeds up to 18 kt), up through several other choices. The most powerful diesels available for the Greenline 45 Flybridge hybrid are a pair rated at 435 HP and capable of 34 kt.

Conclusion

Whether a person considering the purchase of a 45-foot boat is just getting into the boating pastime, or has perhaps come up along a trail of previous vessels with “four footitis”, a prospect for a 45-foot boat is likely to be a careful shopper. The Greenline 45 Flybridge hybrid will check off the usual “boxes” on most shopper’s lists, while adding some exclusive and unique aspects to the boating experience.
